History

The 18th Regiment of Infantry that was organized under the direction of the President on May 3, 1861, and was approved by the congress on July 29th of the same year. The Regiment was organized at Camp Thomas, Columbus, OH under the Command of Colonel Henry B. Carington. Their first recruits opened the camp on July 10, 1861. The 18th, while recruiting, received their fair share of the down and out men, such as criminals on the run and unemployed men. Most the unit was just the average American citizen. Also, the 18th recruited large amounts of Immigrants mostly German and Irish, as well as members from other European Countries. They were the proverbial melting pot.
